A few posts back, I discussed the possibility of pushing past my limits to memorize a speech having been given less preparation time. My intention was to memorize the speech and deliver it that week. Granted this is my first ever public speaking session, I was utterly nervous and frankly did not know if I’d be able to fulfill the duty.
There were moments where I was almost sure it would be impossible. Time was running against me, and I was feeling far far behind. Not only was I to memorize a speech, I was to learn how to memorize a speech, given it was a brand new endeavor for me. The fact that I have been terrified of public speaking my entire life, facing my fears was arguably the biggest challenge above all.
The week start off strong (ish) I sat down in front of my mirror and began reading from my paper word for word. I switched back and forth between listening to a voice memo of the speech over and over and over, while looking myself in the eye in the mirror to allow it to sink in. Back and forth I switched until a paragraph was down. Momentum rolled on and off, progress wasn’t looking too bad.
I found that my attention span was rather shaky, after one paragraph was memorized, I’d get fidgety and want to focus on something else, after a few on and off moments of attention, I recognized that if I didn’t apply myself things wouldn’t be looking good from here. In order to learn how to do something new without frustration or anxiousness taking over, it was clear methods of managing time were necessary.
A friend of mine introduced me to a 15 minute timer method (I was always a “just sit down until it’s finished type of person, and this has always led to successful burnout). A 15 minute timer is set and those minute are applied solely to focus on a task. In this case, it took me roughly 15 minutes per paragraph which turned out to be ideal. Next, a 5 minute timer is set as a dedication to decompress and allow the physical self to fidget or release whatever anxious tension is emotionally or mentally built up agains said task. This method was performed all day, at typical “working hours” treating it as a full 9-5 job in order to achieve desired outcome. Many entrepreneurs know that time management is dire in order to create anything from scratch. I’d argue that a 9-5 job is silly easy as we are told at all times what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and why. Entrepreneurship is clarifying all of these things independently, every day, and still doubling down even when nothing seems to be working (but this is a topic for another day). It was Wednesday, I was less than 50% there, my flight hadn’t been booked and I was fighting against the urge to walk away. It wasn’t until I received an email from the organizer asking about my invitation list that I pulled myself out of that funky mentality reminding myself that there are people counting on me. Not only that, but there are people who need the boost of liberation my story brings. This wasn’t just about me doing something big for myself, it’s about doing something big for those who need someone else to pave the way first.
Three things which obligated me to pull through:
- Applied focus
- Emotional detachment
- Blind faith
Applied focused was broken down into those 15 minute on / 5 minutes off chunks in order to maintain momentum, as explained before.
Emotional detachment was rather vital. I didn’t know if I’d find a reasonably priced flight to make it. I didn’t know if I’d submit to my fear and freeze on stage. I didn’t know if people would be confused by my message, or would find it controversial. I didn’t know if things would “ work out”. The only thing I could do was be prepared, show up, and try. That’s it. Anything beyond that is irrelevant.
Blind faith showed me that anything is possible if we are willing to place our bets in the hands of God. I prayed, and asked the good man upstairs for help figuring out my flight & accommodation situation. Because I was booking quite literally the day before, I figured flights and accommodation would be crazy high. Thursday, after some prayer, a kind reminder from God pushed me to remember about my travel card which sure enough fulfilled the flight over. A friend of mine here in Texas who’s family is sweet and nurturing let me stay over as I took this step into a new season of trial. Thus, last minute, through blind faith and discernment, my prayers were answered. I was going to Texas to deliver my speech, flight booked and stay secured.
Our prayers are most easily answered when we are in alignment with God’s will for us. Things aren’t always this easy, nor do they run this smooth, but I’ve come to find that things miraculously come together when God is in favor of what we are trying to accomplish. This experience was a great test to my faith. I didn’t know how the week would turn out, but I took action, detachment, and blind faith to another level. I knew in my heart that by not stepping up to the plate, I would let myself down. That it was just time to get back out there and do things which my heart has been calling me to do. Importantly, that God wanted me to do. Plus, I was glad no one I invited was there – I’d have been much more nervous if they were. To sit here and write the follow up article one week later and get to say “I did it!” Is frankly an honor. It is honor to be able to show up for ourselves. To push ourselves into worlds we’d only dreamed of, and do thing we have never done. This is what life is about; experiences which enrich the soul.
Have you ever wondered why you feel like people constantly let you down?
Has it ever crossed your mind that you may be the original perpetrator, letting yourself down, leading to experiencing it more in others?
If your answer to the first question is yes, you’d enjoy this article:
